Colors To Avoid

I don’t recommend Neon, mostly it doesn’t suit the skin, especially if you’re with family…..But choosing different shades of this scheme may be better.

Another Worst color, Black—Why BLACK? If it isn’t chosen wisely….This means if you wear black pants with a black shirt and take a picture with your family….then imagine yourself by yourself…..Why it seems so ugly? It doesn’t define your figure completely. But I’m not stopping you from wearing black….. You can wear it with other colors.

I absolutely love how dresses look in photos! They add a soft, elegant touch and flatter almost every body type. Flowy maxi dresses, midi dresses, or even a well-fitted wrap dress can enhance movement and texture in pictures. Not a fan of dresses? No worries! A stylish top with a long skirt or well-fitted trousers works just as beautifully.

👉 If you’re not a fan of your arms, go for sleeved dresses or light layers like a cardigan or a denim jacket.
👉 Love your legs? A knee-length or shorter dress will highlight them effortlessly!
👉 Structured outfits with a defined waistline can create a flattering silhouette.

Wardrobe Check: Comfort & Practicality First!

Test your outfit beforehand – Can you move comfortably without adjusting your top or dress constantly?
Beware of see-through fabrics – Always check your outfit under bright lighting or outdoors before the shoot.

Keep it effortless! A classic button-down shirt paired with jeans or chinos always looks sharp and timeless.

Layering works wonders—a t-shirt under a flannel or an open button-down adds depth without being too formal.

Minimal accessories like a wristwatch, and sunglasses (if you’re under the sun) are always the best idea for a family picture.

🚫 Skip cargo shorts—they can look bulky. Instead, opt for well-fitted casual shorts or pants.

🚫 Avoid clingy performance fabrics—they highlight everything (yes, everything!). If you’re set on a polo, go for a soft cotton version instead.

Style Tips For Kids For Family Photoshoots

Comfort is non-negotiable! If kids are uncomfortable, it will show in the photos—Make sure your kids’ outfits are soft, well-fitted, and free from scratchy fabrics, tight collars, or stiff materials. Must try the outfits on your kids before any photo session.

🍼 Cover that diaper! DON’T use saggy Daiper….I say once again, please avoid it—it scraps the attractiveness of your photos—especially when kids are being held or sitting. Even if it’s hidden while standing, a cute diaper cover in a coordinating color ensures a polished look.

👕 Tucked or untucked? If a tucked-in shirt keeps slipping out, consider a longer fit, or just let it stay untucked for a relaxed vibe—I recommend it for all my mom clients as Constantly adjusting a shirt during the session can be frustrating for both your kids and you.

🦷 Teething baby? Plan ahead! Drool and teething are inevitable, so don’t fight them, just bring a stylish bib or bandana matching your baby’s dressing. It keeps their clothes dry and adds a cute, textured accessory to their look.

🎨 Let their personality shine! Dear MOMS! Go with Playful patterns, soft fabrics, and layered outfits for your babies as they not only look great in photos but also help kids feel like themselves. Let them have a say in their outfit—it keeps them happy and excited for the session!

The goal is to keep things stress-free, fun, and photo-ready while ensuring your little ones feel good and look adorable! 💕

Should I Wear Glasses For Our Photo Session?

The most common concern that often pops up at the last minute—especially when transition lenses unexpectedly darken!

If glasses are a regular part of your look, you should absolutely wear them for your session. I have seen plenty of families with glasses wearers at photoshoot time which doesn’t leave the best impression.

family photo outfit ideas

However, if you have transition lenses, consider bringing a non-transitioning pair or using an old frame with the lenses removed. Darkened lenses can be tricky to manage, even with the best lighting adjustments!

Take The Family On A Test Run

Before your session, do a trial run with everyone in their planned outfits. Walk around, pick up the kids, and go about your usual activities. Notice any issues? Maybe your top shifts awkwardly when you lift your child, your little one’s pants won’t stay put, or the baby won’t stop pulling at a headband. Don’t ignore these small discomforts as these can lead to dig issues a the photoshoot. So swap anything that doesn’t feel right!

For outdoor sessions in cooler months, test outfits in real conditions. Spend at least 20 minutes outside—no quick dashes back inside for warmth! A mild 50°F can feel surprisingly chilly when standing still in the shade.

The goal? Ensuring comfort so everyone looks relaxed and happy in your photos.

Things Not To Wear to Family Photos

Let’s learn, from which we should avoid!

I don’t recommend hats, not for kids not for parents. Just stay simple yet stylish.

Don’t wear anything with words or logos…It makes your whole shoot worse. I never designed outfits with words or logos as they look tacky in pictures. However, if you take pictures with your family for a brand or company’s promotion then alright…you can wear with the brand’s logo.

Don’t wear anything that doesn’t fit you….It’s not good that you pulled or tugged your clothes during the whole session.

Must wear shoes according to your dress….It’s not good to go barefooted for the session.

My Final Sip

Don’t wear anything that doesn’t suit you—Must appear your confidence during the whole photoshoot session.

An extra idea that I like the most in the professional family picture is that parents are in the center…Baby girls are with the dad…Baby boys are with the mom…
